Former CHUNGDAHM Instructor for Ivy Ville Program

At the end of the day, what keeps me at CHUNGDAHM is not the pay, the bonuses, the extra incentives, the huge masses of course materials (and more supplementary materials), the training sessions and re-training sessions, the company events and impromptu get-togethers, the endless stream of administrative emails, or even the special friends I’ve made. What draws me are the students. Anyone with a deep personal commitment to the vocation of teaching gets his/her true reward from students. Ultimately, for me, CHUNGDAHM is not just an institute or business or even a community; it’s a magnet for diverse, bright minds and an opportunity to engage them in true dialogue through the medium of English education. My students never fail to surprise me: a flash of insight into the Yeat’s poem, “The Second Coming,” an impromptu debate argument about the popular appeal of Christianity since Roman times, a whimsical memory of ice-cream trucks in California, trivia about the Loch Ness Monster, a paraphrase from memory of Melville’s “Bartleby the Scrivener” in answer to my question about what boredom can do to people (from a 6th grader!), a big grin from a quiet student who finally sees the humor in a bit of American slang circa 1970, and unexpected insight into the true meaning and value of friendship from a 12 year-old girl with a flair for personal essay writing. These have been the rich rewards of my first couple terms at CHUNGDAHM.
