Everyone comes to work in Korea for different reasons. Some come for the discovery of a new culture, some to reconnect with their culture. Some come for a new international experience, some are coming back to a long lost home. Some are looking for an interesting new career, while yet others are looking to further the careers that they have been planning for years prior to their arrivals here. I came for a combination of all of these reasons.

Four years ago, I was doing quite well at my job, but felt that I needed to take a new step into something that I had never done before. So, I randomly applied for several jobs to teach abroad, and I decided to take one in Korea. Honestly, I didn’t know much about Korea before I came. I only knew the basic history and the political situation, which is probably why I chose to come here in the end.

When I first arrived in Korea, I worked for a small school. My training consisted of one of my coworkers literally saying, "They just want to speak English." He then gave me a textbook and walked away. My second job in Korea was run more professionally, but there were still more problems. There were twenty-eight foreign instructors at that school, but I was the second most senior instructor by time I finished my one year contract - twenty five of my coworkers either quit or were let go that year.

At that point, I was ready to go back but luckily I found CHUNGDAHM in 2005. I like the fact that the training was complete and very informative. I like the idea of walking into the classroom and actually teaching students, not just trying to keep their attention until the clock hits the next hour. I like the fact that all instructors are treated in a professional manner. I never felt that I was simply a guy who had the fortunate situation of being able to speak English. My Head Instructors were always ready to help me develop as an instructor, and the overall atmosphere really made me want to excel. I like the fact that I can trust the company, and grow with the company. I never had issues with pay, as I had at the other two academies that I worked for before this. I also had the opportunity to work as a part time Researcher/Writer, as a Head Instructor, and as a Hiring Manager for the Recruiting Center.
